6 Day Flinders Island Walking Tour

Flinders Island, Tasmania

Overview

Walking on Flinders Island is connecting with Tasmanian island culture in a place that is a superlative natural and cultural wonderland. Named after Captain Matthew Flinders who first navigated these islands in 1798, Flinders Island is one Australia’s best kept walking holiday secrets.

Flinders Island is the main island of the Furneaux group, a collection of 78 islands that stretch across Bass Strait between Tasmania and mainland Australia. A true hidden gem, Flinders is 75km long and 40km wide, with a resident population of about 800 people and is blessed with pure white beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters, striking mountain peaks and ranges. Flinders Island enjoys a more moderate climate compared to its neighbours, Melbourne and Launceston and is best enjoyed in the summer season. With a backbone of granite peaking at Strzelecki and continuing through the Darling Ranges, the island offers spectacular rugged mountain ranges, in addition to rich wide agricultural plains and stunning coastal scenery. The island has abundant native wildlife, gorgeous wild flowers and extensive stands of old growth forests.

Trek Tasmania is excited to offer this guided walking tour, which will be led by two of our professional wilderness guides. This trek is fully vehicle supported so you only carry a day pack. Our guides love to source as much local produce as they can; our meals are a highlight of every trek. We take you to the must see places and the secret spots that no one else knows about, getting fully immersed in the wilderness heart of the island. Our Flinders Island 6 day walking holiday is about getting off track, slowing down the pace, swimming, camping and walking in a true wilderness wonderland.

Testimonials

We have done a number of treks with Trek Australia including the Tasmanian arm and have never been disappointed. This is a brilliant company and we honestly wouldn't even consider doing Tassie or NT for that matter with anyone else. Flinders Island was amazing and made more so with the knowledge and expertise of our 2 very capable and experienced guides. Food was outstanding (as always) and I think we left heavier than arriving even with the walking. Thanks a million TT for another wonderful holiday

Since returning from Flinders Island, I have been reliving this wonderful week through my numerous photos, and promoting both the island and Trek Tours frequently. Flinders Island is an unspoilt gem on our doorstep. On a sunny day, the beauty of the aqua and dark blue ocean lapping the white sands is stunning. Add to this the wonderful rock sculptures and forms, often adorned with orange lichen, it provides a magical backdrop to any holiday. Being able to explore through extensive walks along the coast, over the rocks, and up the mountains to look back on it all and admire it from afar, is the best way to embrace it. The camping was basic, but the experience was amazing. Guided by the wonderful Anne and Nick, we could enjoy the various walks, learning about this special environment, confident that we would be encouraged and helped if the going got tough. I probably only needed it a couple of times, but it was comforting to know support was there. Sitting in an exquisite National Park area, enjoying the company of your group while sipping a wonderful Tassie wine and having nibbles, knowing a magnificent meal was being prepared for us, was heaven. Watching the sun set after a day of activity, walking and swimming, was wonderful. Equally it was enjoyable to learn of the history of the island, and the balance provided by other activities from the museum visit to a wine tasting was great. As a single female traveller in my 60s, I am enjoying discovering the support available through tours such as this which make it possible for me to do things I love, in the company of like minded people, with professional and friendly support. Thank you Trek Tasmania

I just wanted to say "thank you" to the group for a marvellous trip to Flinders Island last week. I had a thoroughly good time, and enjoyed it immensely. As with the Larapinta trek, the guides were incredible...it always amazes me how they can smile cheerily no matter what time of day or circumstance, how they support and encourage us when we start to flag, but how they don't push you to go past your limits. Never condescending, always helpful. Sean (Shaun? Darn...wish I'd learned his name better.) was so sweet and caring, Joel so jaunty, and Brad so laid back they made a fabulous team, with such a lovely mix of personalities, and their efforts were truly appreciated. The scenery there is incredible. The campsites were in great scenic locations, walks were so varied and interesting, picnic spots rivalled each other for supremacy, meals were brilliant. Being at the very top of Strzlecki when the mist came through in tongues around the peaks was just unbelievable. So...a huge "well done" to the boys, and to the rest of you crew for another great trip.

Flinders Island was my third hike with Trek Tasmania and you have surpassed my expectations again. This island is a hidden treasure - massive rock formations, sandy coves and bush wilderness. Brad and Andrew are an amazing team who worked extraordinarily hard to ensure each person in the group had a memorable experience. Brad's guiding is enthusiastic and passionate and Andrew is able to produce exceptional cuisine using very basic facilities. The knowledge they each have of Tasmania is outstanding and it was a privilege to be on this tour with them. Every day of the hike was magnificent. The campsites were in secluded areas on what seemed to be our own private beach. The hiking was varied and challenging. Climbing Mt Strzelecki was demanding; but standing on the summit taking in the spectacular panorama was unforgettable. I would also like to complement your pre-tour service. Kym is always on the ball, keeping clients informed and updated. Receipts and confirmations are sent promptly and e-mails responded too quickly. I always feel confident every detail has been covered before the tour commences. I look forward to travelling with Trek Tasmania again. Thanks again for a phenomenal experience
