Join us on this challenging 7 day full pack exploratory hike, for a unique opportunity to explore the heart of the remote and beautiful southern Kakadu country. This wilderness adventure trek covers approximately 50km between the Koolpin Gorge and Twin Falls.
The landscapes are diverse featuring rock plateaus, woodlands, paperbark forests, escarpment country and highland creeks. Koolpin Gorge (Jarrangbarnmi) is located on a south facing part of the main escarpment in southern Kakadu and descends from the plateau and escarpment country in the valley of the upper South Alligator River. The name Jarrangbarnmi comes from the Jawoyn words jarrang meaning flood, or big water flow, and barn meaning rift or gap. The gorge and spectacular surrounding country are exceptionally beautiful, with many rare and/or endemic plant and animal species. Our arrival at the top of Twin Falls on the final day reveals stunning views of this famous gorge area.
Our trek is unmarked and exploratory in nature giving us the freedom to discover this unique country with the aid of maps and a compass. There is no set itinerary; we are privileged to journey together through this beautiful country, exploring a remote wilderness where few venture.

Our 7 day Koolpin Explorer trek is a demanding walk, we advise you to do as much training as you can before your tour with us. The more you train for the walk the easier you will handle the terrain and the more you will enjoy this wonderful part of the world. It’s also important to come along with an open mind ready for an awesome experience whatever the weather, whoever the group.
We need to stress that this is a demanding hike – there is no vehicle support once you have been dropped at the start,
and you need to feel confident carrying a full pack weighing up to 20kg. The other factor in Kakadu is the heat and humidity – while we try to walk in the coolest parts of the day, you need to be prepared for temperatures in the high 20s/low 30s and relatively high humidity.
It is very important that you bring the right gear for the conditions. A comprehensive gear list is included on the itinerary. Quality backpacks are available for hire. If you are at all concerned about your ability to do this walk, please feel free to call one of us here at Trek Tours Australia for more advice.
On the 7 day Koolpin Explorer trek you will be required to carry all your equipment in a full trekking pack that is 70-90 litres in capacity. This includes sleeping bag, inflatable sleeping mat, mosquito dome, a proportion of the group’s food supplies and all personal items as specified in our gear list. Depending on the quality and quantity of personal gear and toiletries, your pack may weigh up to 20kg. A comprehensive gear list is available on the downloadable itinerary and details what equipment/clothing is included in the tour cost, what items are available for hire and what you will need to bring with you.
A pre-trip briefing and a full gear check with your guides the afternoon before your Koolpin Explorer trek departs will ensure you have the right mix of gear for your adventure. Please make your way to the NT General Store, 42 Cavenagh Street Darwin at 4PM the day before your trip, bringing your pack and what you intend to bring on your trek.
I am writing to let you know that I had a wonderful time on the Kakadu trip. I thought that things could not be better after Larapinta end to end with the fantastic Kat and Joel but it did! Josh, Steve and Jo were the Dream Team. Josh was such a good guide, often stopping to tell us about a cave, a wall, a rock with art that we would see just ahead, a bird flying overhead or a plant at our feet, cooking us delicious meals every evening and just being so knowledgeable and enthusiastic always. Steve was always happy to offer his hand to guide me through some of the more difficult stages and was also a mind of information about what we encountered along the way, fantastic. And Jo, she was also a helping hand when needed with a happy smile at every stage, her breakkie porridge was wonderful. Such a brilliant team that worked so hard to ensure we had a wonderful trip and they worked so well together - make sure you keep them, they were the added bonus and were the cherry on top of the Kakadu cake. Brilliant. The hike was hard, no doubt about that and I feel that all 3 of the guides in their own way, brought that little extra something to the trip. More of the same please! Please tell them that they made the trip extra special and thank them for their hard work and dedication, it will never be forgotten. Thank you Trek Tours
Would you please pass on to Brad and Clare my thanks for the professional guiding on the last Kakadu walk, I really enjoyed their company and professional guiding they are both a real asset to Trek Tours Australia.
We all had a memorable time and were in awe of our guides who provided the best food we have had !
Almost a year has gone by, but I'm now finally writing to tell you how much John and I loved the Kakadu Trek. It was awe-inspiring, a life-changing experience and Brad and Joel were the perfect guides. John and I are still drawing from the energy of the experience.
Finally have the time to sit and thank Holger, Brad and young Jake for an absolutely fantastic Kakadu walk. Yet again you guys have surpassed yourselves! Not only were there stunning surprises at every turn but each campsite kept getting more and more beautiful. I really didn't think you could get better than the deep gorge site but then we got to Utopia!!! Words cannot describe how spectacular it is - I was very sorry to say farewell. I cannot think of one highlight as there were so many. The art work was awesome and every time I look through the photos I am amazed at how old and well preserved they are, a great group of people and although it was hot we all still had lots of fun!!!!Of course I can't not mention the amazing meals!! Again I think these are the only walks I do when I have to be careful not to put on weight!!!!!Again thanks a million - you have a winning formula and we can't wait to do another one with you all.Hopefully Arthur's foot will get sorted and we'll be back for Kangaroo and Flinders Islands.
Last year, July 2014, I walked with Australian Wilderness Adventures (now also called Trek Tours), on their Kakadu Explorer walk. One of the best walks I've done. Small group, great guides. We have walked three times with Australian Wilderness Adventures / Trek Tours. Excellent experiences every time. They are our choice for guided walks.
