The trail follows an ancient Jawoyn song line through the Nitmiluk National Park. The Jatbula Trail takes us up onto the Arnhem Land Escarpment, through shady monsoon forests, past spectacular waterfalls and their crystal clear swimming pools and introduces us to stunning Jawoyn Aboriginal rock art sites. We camp in some of the most amazing wilderness country in Australia.
The Jatbula Trail is 62km from start to finish and is a full pack bushwalking adventure taking us far away from city life and immersing us into this ancient wonderland. The Jatbula is an exclusive destination opening only during the dry season from June to September, with a limit of 15 people per day permitted. Trek Tours Australia operate trips in June, July, and early August, the coolest and driest months – enjoying perfect blue sky days, cool nights and plenty of water for our afternoon swims.

Most likely the best hike I have done. A big thanks to our guides Warrick and Brad from Trek Tours Australia who put in such an effort to bring us the whole experience. The food was amazing, and their knowledge on the surrounding environment and aboriginal culture made walking this song-line that much more breathtaking. Well recommended to those who like multi day hiking with epic views and stunning water holes to plunge into at each camp.
Our group of 12 hiked the 66km of the Jatbula Trail with Trek Tours Australia. The uniquely Australian Outback scenery and fabulous waterholes at each campsite made it a pretty special trip. There was plenty of time to relax in the afternoon by the waterfalls, which was a highlight. Our professional guides,Josh and Warrick ensured a fabulous week, filled with local knowledge of the flora, fauna and local history, as well as encouragement, support and humour. I would highly recommend it and cannot wait to do it again!
What a wonderful trek. Holger was a wonderful guide, so perceptive in how he cared for both Steve and me. I loved having so much time to myself to relax and enjoy the awesomeness of the Australian outback. I couldn't believe I had the luxury of swimming in waterholes alone. It was great feeling no pressure to race onto "the next thing". Instead, I could just live totally in the moment and learn to see what was in front of my eyes – the many forms of wildlife being sustained in a precious habitat. Plus, being able to spend time looking at the amazing night sky (three shooting stars in one night!) is something I will never get enough of. The Jatbula Trail was a very special trek for me. My preconceived ideas about what the Australian desert would be like were totally smashed – what I saw was a land that has adapted to dry and wet seasons and where there is an abundance of flora and fauna (I don't know much about identifying bird species, all I can say is that we saw heaps and Holger's bird calls were great for creating enough curiosity in the birds that they would come and visit us). Every waterhole was a delight, especially after a hot day of walking. Seeing so many Aboriginal rock paintings was a very humbling experience. It was a reminder that people have lived here for tens of thousands of years and were able to do this because they knew the land and how to tread carefully on the earth. Once again, I would like to thank Australian Wilderness Adventures for creating such wonderful trekking experiences and sharing your love of Australia with those who choose to trek with you. That love for walking on country is very infectious. I really hope to come on more treks with you in the near future. My feet are already itching for the next adventure! The experience was very important to me, something I will treasure for the rest of my life.
Well organised guided 6 day walk by Trek Tours. Learned SO much along the way from passionate guides, Brad and Joel. Spectacular, spiritual country...feel very privileged to have been there. Wonderful waterfalls and rock pools to cool off each day. Good equipment, great food. Carried packs, so all the pack carrying training we did before the trip really paid off.
Walked the Jatbula Trail with Trek Tours early June and could not rate the walk nor Trek Tours highly enough. The trail was incredible, reasonably easy walking, several first timers with us, the ever changing landscape and waterholes were unbelievable. Trek Tours can not be faulted. Easy to arrange, everything was planned, guides (Brad and Joel) were both very experienced, full of information, fun and fed us extremely well. Nothing was ever too much trouble and somehow there was still chocolate every night. Will be travelling with Trek Tours again!
We undertook this walk with Australian Wilderness Adventures recently and had a blast. We also had Steve and Jacob as guides who were fantastic with their knowledge and hints. Our group of 10 had only 2 experienced walkers and they took it in their stride, so to speak. Happy to share their extensive knowledge and give time to all of our foot and walking problems. The walk was beautiful, through many types of landscapes and each night was spent beside a waterhole, giving ample opportunity to swim and cool down. Early starts were the order of the day so we arrived at each campsite around lunchtime before the heat of the day really set in. There is one longer days walk but we stopped at a beautiful waterhole in the red rock and swam while our guides organised lunch. Each night we slept in mozzie domes and at night you could lie in bed and stare at the big sky. You are so far from any light sources it is special. At Sandy Camp campsite most of us lay on a big flat rock and stared at the heavens, counting the shooting stars. Tip: Train hard for this walk, practise with a heavy backpack on all sorts of terrain. It will make your journey more enjoyable.
Recently my daughter and I went with Australian Wilderness Adventures on the 6 day Jatbula Trail walk.It was a truly sensational experience. Our guides Steve and Jacob were excellent taking great care to ensure all in the group were faring well. Steve's first hand knowledge of place, tradition and nature was generously shared making the trip a feast for the mind as well as the senses. The magnificent waterholes, waterfalls and camping under starry skies were the highlights of each day. I was initially worried about hiking with a 15kg pack but I needn't have been concerned as there were many opportunities to rest and on most days we were at our campsite by lunchtime enabling a relaxing afternoon of swimming, resting and exploring. I would highly recommend the walk to anyone interested in seeing a remarkable part of Australia.
We did the Jatbula trail at the peak of the dry season with Australian Wilderness Adventures. Coming from a busy and stressful job straight into the heart of the NT wilderness was instantly refreshing and calming. From beginning to end the operation was totally professional. Our guides; Holger and Steve, were so knowledgeable and very friendly and down to earth, such that we felt immediately welcome and at home even though we were at first in a group of strangers. We got to appreciate the landscape and feel how ancient the land there is. The guides showed us the beauty of the land, the ancient aboriginal art and gave us time just to soak it all in. Swimming in the waterholes was the most magical experience of the trip. Every camp was uniquely beautiful in its own way and there was the chance to swim at each of them. Every day it felt as if we were the first people to ever visit each place- it was so remote and pristine. A happy surprise was the great cuisine. Our guides prepared fresh and simple but delicious meals every night and even washed up! In the morning we would emerge from our mossie domes to find fresh coffee brewing and usually hot porridge too- it was very yummy. The nights after dinner were also magical. One of my best memories is borrowing Steve's glow-in-the-dark sky chart and finding all the constellations in the glittering sky above us. We slept under the stars in our mozzie domes- it was sometimes hard to sleep with the night-time beauty around us. I cannot recommend the Jatbula trail with AWA enough- it was one of the best travelling experiences of my life. In my opinion the Jatbula is one of the best, and under-recognised, walks of Australia.
What an amazing trek! It is a true wilderness walk and our small group only saw other people on track on our last day. We slept in mozzie domes under the brilliant starry sky and camped by the most amazing waterfalls and water holes every night. The trek is reasonably hard as you need to carry a heavy pack with all your supplies. While the distances covered each day are not huge, you must be fit enough to carry a pack in the Aussie heat. At the beginning of August it was 36 degrees in the shade by early afternoon. You need to get up early and walk before the heat gets too intense. Having said that its absolutely worth it. The remoteness and the beauty of the the bush is hard to capture in words. We saw fabulous aboriginal cave drawings that were over 20,000 years old. Swimming in such pure, sweet water every day was also wonderful. The waterfalls are just beautiful. If you are looking for peace, quiet and a sense of remoteness, then this is the trek for you! Our guide Dan ( with Australian Wilderness Adventures) was just fantastic. He was completely at home in this landscape and looked after us brilliantly. We will never forget this incredible adventure!
