To explore the Flinders is to experience the essence of our great country. Sir Hans Heysen remarked it was akin to seeing ‘the bones of nature laid bare’. With its’ rugged mountain peaks, immense gorges, sweeping arid desert country and alpine like forests, the Flinders Ranges is a truly unforgettable experience. The Heysen Trail is rated as one of the premier long distance walks of the world and Trek Tours Australia takes you to the heart of it – the Northern Flinders Ranges.
In February 2016 the Flinders Ranges National Park was officially renamed the Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park, in recognition of its traditional Aboriginal owners. The new name incorporates an Adnyamathanha word, Ikara, which means “meeting place” reflecting the traditional name for Wilpena Pound — a natural amphitheatre of mountains forming one of the most prominent features of the Ranges. It has always been a significant part of Adnyamathanha culture and the traditional owners maintain Dreamtime stories about the Pound and how it was formed.

While our 6 day Heysen Trail trek is a day pack walking holiday, it is a demanding walk – we advise you to do as much training as you can before your tour with us. The more you train for the walk the easier you will handle the terrain and the more you will enjoy this wonderful part of the world. It’s also important to come along with an open mind, ready for an awesome experience whatever the weather, whoever the group. It is very important that you bring the right gear for the conditions. A comprehensive gear list is included in the available downloadable brochure. Walking poles and gaiters are also available for hire. If you are at all concerned about your ability to do this walk, please feel free to call one of us here at Trek Tours Australia for more advice.
It was a fabulous week on the Heysen Trail, the scenery was amazing and I am really thrilled that I was able to achieve all the walking without too much angst – even if I was usually at the end of the group on the trails. As I mentioned on my feedback form, I have a strong sense of achievement and of confidence in getting back into more walking and in particular, to plan to walk a substantial part of the Camino next year. After we had filled in the feedback forms on Tuesday morning, I reflected on my experience and what had made it so good for me. In their different ways, the style of Ash, Warwick and Jacob was very supportive and exuded a quiet confidence in us that was encouraging and very positive without it being ‘over the top’. We were helped but ‘not fussed over’ which was great. I never felt that I was too slow or felt I had to hurry up or in any way felt ‘patronised’ . In fact the reverse – ‘respectful’ seems to be the best word to describe their approach. I really appreciate it. And I hope that I may walk with Trek Tours again. Please give my thanks again to the great team of Jacob, Warwick and Ash. With best wishes
We had the best time. Cannot overstate how fabulously we were looked after by Brad, Warrick and Ann. Nothing was too much for them and their encouragement at every stage made the trip an amazing experience. Food was delicious and above expectation, accommodation was great, the route planned very well with a good blend of travel and exercise. They were always accommodating and even us senior members were made to feel that we were no trouble to them. I thank Warrick for fixing my camel pack. Sure made the walk more comfortable for me. The whole experience was outstanding. Please pass on my thanks to all. The organization was sensational from the outset. Your reminders were timely and I thank you for answering all our dumb questions. It was a great experience from the start to the finish.
Just a quick message to thank all at Australian Wilderness Adventures for an exilerating hike throughout the Flinders Ranges. The logistics were spot on and our guides Brad, Anne and Elise were friendly, always obliging, knowledgeble and very professional. The scenery was spectacular and I had time to take photos of often tiny flowers along the way. The group were always friendly and I learned much from you all. This was the second trip with Australian Wilderness Adventures and it will not be my last. Thankyou all for a wonderful seven days.
I wanted to pass onto all concerned my complete admiration and satisfaction with the way our trek to the Flinders Ranges in Sept was run. From our first enquiries, your service was exemplary. Our guides were just the best, coping so well with the mix of abilities ( Paula and I were by far the least fit - we blame the flat landscape around Mildura for that! ) Their enthusiasm for the environment, their culinary flair and their knowledge of the area made the trip just terrific for us all. Paula and I both suffered with sore feet and Annie and Elise were so attentive and caring, nursing our poor old digits with trekking wool. Wow! is that stuff amazing!
Many thanks to all of you for such a wonderful journey through the Flinders Ranges and vicinity. The walks were brilliant, the meals marvellous, the camping lots of fun. Great to meet all our fellow travellers. And thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
